Calvary Chapel has been formed as a fellowship of believers in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Our supreme desire is to know Christ and be conformed to His image by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are not a denominational church, nor are we opposed to denominations as such, only their over-emphasis of the doctrinal differences that have led to the division of the Body of Christ.
Fellowship
We believe the only true basis of Christian fellowship is Christ’s agape love, which is greater than any difference we possess, and without which we have no right to claim ourselves Christians.
The Scriptures
We believe that the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired, infallible, and without error in the original manuscripts. The Word of God is the foundation upon which the church operates and is the basis for which the church is governed. We believe that the Word of God supersedes any earthly law that is contrary to the Holy Scriptures. We look to the Word of God for the basis of all our faith and practice.
The Triune God
We believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; that this triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all things.
God the Father
We believe in the person of God the Father, an infinite, eternal, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all those who come to Him through Jesus Christ.
God the Son
We believe Jesus Christ, though fully God, became a man in the flesh. We believe that He is the promised Messiah, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, provided for the atonement of our sins by His death on the Cross, was bodily resurrected, ascended back to the right hand of God the Father, and ever lives to make intercession for us. After Jesus ascended to Heaven, He poured out His Holy Spirit on the believers in Jerusalem, enabling them to fulfill His command to preach the Gospel to the entire world, an obligation shared by all believers today.
God the Holy Spirit
We believe in the person and work of the Holy Spirit who indwells, seals, and empowers every believer, baptizing them into the Body of Christ. We also believe all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Scriptures are valid for today, and that they are to be exercised within the scriptural guidelines set forth in God’s Word. We believe that love is more important than all the gifts, and without this love all exercise of spiritual gifts is worthless.
Sin and Salvation
We believe that all people are by nature separated from God and responsible for their own sin, but that salvation, redemption, and forgiveness are freely offered to all by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. When a person repents of sin and accepts Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord, trusting Him to save, that person is immediately born again and sealed by the Holy Spirit, all his/her sins are forgiven, and that person becomes a child of God.
Church Government
We believe Jesus Christ is the head of the body, His church. Church government should be simplistic rather than complex and bureaucratic. We desire to be under the authority of the Word of God and led by the Holy Spirit in all the ministry of the church.
Ordinances
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ instituted two ordinances for the church: the full-immersion water baptism of believers and the Lord’s Supper.
Heaven and Hell
We believe in heaven and hell and that all those who repent of their sins and place their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord will spend eternity in heaven. Those who reject Jesus’ free gift of salvation will spend eternity separated from the Lord.
Second Coming of Christ
We believe in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, which is His personal, visible return to Earth and the establishment of His millennial kingdom, in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous and endless separation of the wicked.
Creation Order
We believe God created the heavens and the earth and all that is visible and invisible. In creating man and woman God established the pattern and principle of male leadership and responsibility in both the home and the church, according to the sacrificial example of Jesus. We believe this limits the roles of pastoral leadership and doctrinal authority to qualified men.
Marriage
We believe that God created mankind and that He created them male and female. As such, He created them different so as to complement and complete each other. God instituted monogamous marriage between one male and one female as the foundation of the family and the basic structure of human society.
